Statement regarding surveys by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center has cooperated fully in two surveys conducted by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) in conjunction with the Texas Department of State Health Services following a self-reported adverse event.

Due to patient privacy and the regulatory process, we are unable to share extensive background and details. However, we want to reassure patients and their loved ones of our steadfast commitment to providing safe, quality care every single day.

Last year alone, more than 140,000 people from around the world sought cancer care from our team of experts. For each and every one of our patients and everyone counting on us, it is our duty to learn from the CMS process as we work to accomplish our mission to end cancer.

CMS has the right and responsibility to survey any hospital participating in Medicare and Medicaid programs. CMS has avenues of escalating serious events that pose an immediate threat to patient care. MD Anderson did not receive that level of rating and is not on a pathway to termination from CMS programs.

We welcome the review and the feedback received from CMS, and we are taking this feedback very seriously. Our resulting focus is on resolution, learning and improvement, and this process affords us the opportunity to further strengthen and supplement our efforts.

We remain confident in the excellence and expertise of our care providers and of all 21,000 of our employees. We will settle for nothing less than outstanding care for our patients.
